Abstract

The concept of leadership has been extensively researched in the literature but the majority of such studies emanate from North America and reflect the culture of those countries, leaving the question of leadership in developing countries largely unexplored. The focus of these articles were on the  personality and traits of individual leaders, transactional and transformational styles, and the concept of hero leaders. More recent studies focused on the emergence of a broader range of leadership styles, such as an expanded transformational leadership concept, ethical, caring, servant, authentic, and distributed styles. Developing countries have tended to generate leaders who moved between autocratic and paternalistic styles which, it is argued, derive from the peculiar historical development of several such countries as colonies of metropolitan centers, and, as in the case of the Caribbean region, the recipient of labor based on African slavery and Indian indentureship. This paper proposes that Caribbean leaders adopt a more sustainable entrepreneurial development style which combines a transformational approach with the emerging authentic, ethical, and servant leadership styles that are appropriate to the achievement of the accepted development goals of modern society.
