This paper attempts to fill the existing gaps in the banking ethics literature, by providing a comprehensive comparison of ethical practices in public and private sector banks. It is based on an empirical study of ethical practices in public and private sector banks in Punjab region of India. For this study primary data were collected by questionnaire method from three main regions of Punjab viz. Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana. A sample of 274 managers was used from public and private sector banks for the study. Factor analysis was done and five main factors were identified to measure ethical practices in banks. Kruskal Wallis test was applied on data to test null hypothesis. It was found that public and private sector banks vary significantly in ethical banking and in ethical orientation of managers.
