Abstract

Our objective in this study is to examine how the macro-economy affects entrepreneurial aspirations and entrepreneurial attitudes. For entrepreneurial aspirations, we look into three variables (i.e. Growth Expectation Early-stage Entrepreneurial Activity, New Product Early-stage Entrepreneurial Activity, and International Orientation Early-stage Entrepreneurial Activity). For entrepreneurial attitudes, we focus on eight variables (i.e. Entrepreneurial Intention, Entrepreneurship as Desirable Career Choice, Fear of Failure Rate, High Status Successful Entrepreneurship, Know Startup Entrepreneur Rate, Media Attention for Entrepreneurship, Perceived Capabilities, and Perceived Opportunities). Our results show that none of the entrepreneurial aspiration variables are affected by the macro-economy. With regard to entrepreneurial attitudes, we find that, out of the eight variables, only one of them is affected significantly. When there is a prolonged economic expansion period, a significantly higher percentage of the population sees good opportunities to start a firm in the area where they live. Our results confirm that economic expansions significantly affect the “perception of opportunities” among the population.
