The Effect of on-the-job Training on the Behavioral Intention of Employees

Abstract

Employee training programs play a vital role in developing employee skills and attitudes ultimately affecting their behavior. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of employee training on the behavioral intention of the employees on workplace selection by postal service officers in Sri Lanka Postal Department. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) was used to understand the fundamental cognitive influences on the intention by examining the respondents’ Attitudes, Perceived Behavioral Control (PBC) and Subjective Norms (SN). A questionnaire survey was conducted among a sample of 400 postal service officers selected on the basis of geographical cluster sampling from 13 districts in Sri Lanka. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings revealed that the training program has a positive direct effect on the postal service officers’ intended workplace selection (<0.05). Other than the direct effects, training experience has a positive significant (<0.05) indirect effect on intention via Attitudes, PBC and SN. Findings revealed the role of employee training in improving the skills and attitudes and suggest the significance of employee training in achieving organizational goals.
